SOUTHERN NURSERIES LAWN PROGRAM
Fall/Established Lawns Spring Seeding Weed & Feed

FALL SEEDED / ESTABLISHED LAWNS
1st APPLICATION (FEB 1 – MAR 15)—Before Forsythia blooms
Apply a pre-emergent and fertilizer combination product according to the labeled rates. The pre-emergent is used primarily to control annual grassy weeds such as crabgrass, quackgrass, goosegrass, and foxtail, but it will act on some broadleaf weeds as well. The fertilization rate need not be very high in the early spring and springtime because conditions are favorable for good plant development. Also, excessive spring fertilization can require frequent mowing or lead to fungal diseases such as brownpatch.
Product to use:
Lebanon 20-3-10 25% POLY X PRO with BARRICADE .29% or
Lebanon 18-3-7 30% POLY X PRO with DIMENSION .09%

2nd APPLICATION (APR 1 – MAY 15)—6-8 weeks after 1st
Repeat 1st application using the same product. Spot treat or spray for any problem broadleaf weeds such as dandelion, clover, and plantains.

3rd APPLICATION (JUNE 15 – JULY 30)—Depending on moisture availability.
Apply the labeled rate of a slow release capability fertilizer to minimize burn on the turf. A product high in potassium is beneficial in deterring heat stress during the hot summer months. Further, including Iron (Fe) will deepen the turfs color provided that there is adequate moisture.
Product to use:
Lebanon 25-10-10 40% POLY X PRO .02% Fe or
Isopro 20-3-20 40% IBDU 1%Mg 2% Fe

4th APPLICATION (SEP 15 – OCT 30)—In conjunction with overseeding
This is the optimal time to overseed or totally renovate cool season (tall fescue) lawns. When overseeding, it is recommended to mow existing turf at a low blade setting and remove resultant clippings by bagging or raking. Proceed with core aeration in both directions (checkerboard pattern) across the lawn. Depending on turf density, overseed at a rate of 3 to 6 pounds of seed per 1000 sq. ft. Finally, according to the labeled rate, apply a good seed starter fertilizer that is relatively high in phosphorous.
To renovate a lawn follow the same basic procedure, but your first step is to eradicate any unwanted grasses or weeds (Bermuda, johnsongrass, dallisgrass) with an product such as RoundUp®. Total eradication may take multiple treatments. With that accomplished, follow the procedure with the exception of seeding heavier in the treated areas (8# - 10# seed).
IMPORTANT! WATERING PROPERLY IS ESSENTIAL FOR SUCCESSFUL SEEDING.
Product to use:
Lebanon Winning Colors Premium Turf-Type Tall Fescue Blend
Lebanon 16-25-13 70%POLY X PRO Seed Starter

5th APPLICATION (NOV 15 – DEC 30)—Dormant Winter Fertilization
Normally at this time top growth has ceased but the roots of the grass are still actively storing nutrients for the winter months and for early spring "green-up." This is the proper time to fertilize heavily to aid plant development.
Product to use:
Lebanon 32-4-8 37% POLY X PRO

SPRING SEEDED LAWNS
1st APPLICATION—Early March of as soon as the weather allows.
Properly prepare the areas to be seeded and sow at the appropriate rate based on overall turf density. Bare ground 8# - 10# per 1000 sq. ft. or as little as 3#- 4#. Use a good starter fertilizer to get the new grass off the best start possible.REMEMBER: Spring is not the optimal time to establish a lawn, so it is essential that proper cultural practices are used. Watering to establish turf and repetitive watering during hot summer months are mandatory to keep this immature turf alive. Also, mowing at maximum blade height will help conserve moisture, reduce stress, and minimize weed competition.
Products to use:
Winning Colors Premium Turf-Type Tall Fescue Blend
Lebanon 16-25-13 70% POLY X PRO Seed Starter

2nd APPLICATION (MID TO LATE APRIL) Depending on the particular situation there are 2 options at this time. The new grass should have grown enough that it should have been mowed at least twice before doing either of these things.

1. Use a combination product with Dimension or Barricade in it to help control any of the late germinating grassy weeds. It is important to note that, as a general rule there will be more weed pressure with spring seeding. It will be necessary to spray or spot treat for broadleaf weeds.

Products to use:
Lebanon 20-3-10 25% POLY X PRO with BARRICADE .29% or
Lebanon 18-3-7 30% POLY X PRO with DIMENSION .09%

2. Don't worry about the annual grasses and apply a weed & feed product to fertilize and treat for broadleaf weeds.

Product to use:
Lebanon 20-3-7 30% POLY X PRO with TRIMEC
APPLICATIONS #3, #4, and #5 are the same as the fall seeded / established lawns.
